The Simbionix GI-Mentor, introduced in 1999,
is an interactive, computerized simulator that provides medical
experts with hands-on training on a vast array of endoscopic procedures.
Endoscopy trainees insert a customized endoscope into a mannequin,
simultaneously receiving forced-feedback sensation and rich visual
feedback from the monitor.
ERCP Module
The ERCP add-on module for GI-Mentor simulates training on diagnostic
and therapeutic ERCP procedures of various biliary and pancreatic
diseases. The first of its kind on the market; ERCP features a split-screen
simultaneous display of both endoscopic and fluoroscopic views.
ERCP training includes:
Location and cannulation of the papilla
Injection of contrast agents to expose the biliary
tree and pancreatic duct
Basic therapeutic procedures such as dilation
of strictures and extraction of biliary stones using ballo9ons
and baskets
Electrical sphincterotomy of various anatomies
of the papilla
ERCP comes with a brand-new, authentic Pentax
duodenoscope.
Bleeding Module
The Bleeding procedures add-on module for GI-Mentor provides endoscopists,
trainees and nurses with a practice model for emergency bleeding
situations that require urgent treatment. The module is particularly
crucial due to the unpredictable nature of bleeding situations and
difficulty of training on such scenarios.
Bleeding comes with several new accessories used
specifically for these situations: catheter for irrigation of bleeding
mucosa and bipolar coagulation probe for irrigation and coagulation.
Existing tools such as injection needle, cold snare for clot removal,
and biopsy forceps are also used during treatment of bleeding pathologies.
The cases were created in collaboration with
Dr. Sven Adamsen and Dr. Soren Meisner of Bispebjerg Hospital Copenhagen,
Denmark.
